Acacias
The genus Acacia previously contained roughly 1300 species, about 960 of them native to Australia.
Structural adaptations:
- There are thorns that protect the plant from unwanted predators
- Long tap roots that reach water and moisture underground
- Umbrella shaped top enables the tree to be able to capture as much sunlight as possible to photosynthesis.
Physiological Adaptations:
- It is well adapted to saline and alkaline soils
- Highly tolerant of water logging which enables it to survive in areas where flooding occurs.
